The small details matter especially when it comes to the bride’s wedding attire.  As the owner of Montagu Meadows, a barn wedding venue located in Westminster, MD, I have seen many shoe trends over the years.  I realize when planning your wedding, you might not think about the small details like shoes.  It might not be the first thing on your mind but this detail that can have a big impact. From how you walk down the aisle to how long you survive on the dance floor, your bridal shoes play a huge role in your comfort and confidence on the big day. Unfortunately, many brides overlook key details, leading to some common regrets. To help you avoid painful blisters, last-minute stress, and mismatched footwear, here are the top 10 things brides regret when buying bridal shoes and how you can sidestep them.

1. Waiting Until the Last Minute to Buy Your Wedding Shoes

One of the most common regrets brides face is leaving their shoe purchase too late. Brides tend to be worried about finding the perfect venue to the perfect dress.  As the owner of Montagu Meadows, I recommend purchasing your dress

first and then start finding the perfect pair of shoes right after.  Your dress fittings often require you to have your shoes so that hem adjustments can be made accurately. Waiting until the final weeks before your wedding means you’re rushed, have fewer options, and risk not having time to properly break in your shoes. Start shopping early!

2. Choosing Wedding Shoes That Don’t Match the Dress

It might sound obvious, but many brides fall in love with a pair of shoes and forget to consider whether they complement the style and length of their gown. A vintage lace dress might not pair well with ultra-modern stilettos. Similarly, heavily embellished shoes might clash with a sleek satin gown. Always consider your dress’s material, color, and vibe when shoe shopping.

3. Not Considering the Wedding Venue

Your wedding location should heavily influence your footwear. For example, stiletto heels are a disaster on a grassy field or in a rustic barn where wood

slats and stone paths are common. Outdoor venues call for wedges, block heels, cowboy boots or flats that won’t sink into the ground. Think function, comfort, and fashion when factoring in your venue.

4. Failing to Try the Wedding Shoes On

Buying shoes online without trying them on first can be a gamble. Sizing varies between brands, and even if they technically fit, they may pinch, rub, or simply not feel secure. Always try shoes on and walk around in them to ensure they’re comfortable and the right fit for your foot shape. And yes, try on both feet!

5. Wearing Uncomfortable Wedding Shoes

No matter how beautiful they are, shoes that hurt your feet will turn your dream day into painful ones. Keep in mind that you’ll be standing, walking, and dancing in them for hours. Look for cushioning, arch support, and secure straps. And you do not have to compromise on style. Designers are increasingly using innovative materials to ensure high quality and comfort.  Trust me your feet will thank you later.

6. Forgetting a Spare Set of Shoes

Having a second pair of shoes can be a game-changer. Many brides opt for a pretty pair of heels for the ceremony and photos, then switch to flats, sandals, or sneakers for the reception. Don’t assume you’ll be fine in one pair all day.  Plan for comfort as the hours stretch on. I always suggest choosing a  fun or personalized second-shoe options for the dance floor.

7. Ignoring Heel Height and Walking Ease

You might be used to heels, but if you’re not, your wedding day isn’t the time to

test your endurance. Very high heels can make walking gracefully difficult, especially on uneven surfaces. Remember, you’ll be walking down the aisle, taking photos, and possibly navigating stairs. Choose a heel height that feels stable and natural for you.

8. Prioritizing Looks Over Practicality

Some brides go for style over substance and pick ornate shoes that look great in photos but are impractical to wear. Think beading that catches on your dress, slippery soles, or shoes that require constant adjustment. Gorgeous shoes are great, but if you’re fussing with them all day, it’s not worth it.  If you really want the ornate shoes, just wear them for pictures.

9. Not Wearing Them Before the Big Day

New shoes need breaking in, especially if you plan to wear them for hours. Wear them around the house, on carpets, or even to a bridal shower to get used

to how they feel. This also helps soften the material and reduce the risk of painful blisters.  But remember try to keep them clean for your special day.

10. Overlooking Weather Conditions

For outdoor weddings, weather plays a major role. Rain can turn grassy aisles into muddy messes, and heat can cause feet to swell. Keep the forecast in mind and consider backup options like heel protectors or weather-appropriate footwear if needed. Flexibility is key.

Your bridal shoes may be small in size, but they carry a lot of weight. By planning ahead, keeping comfort in mind, and thinking about your dress and venue, you can find shoes that support you every step of the way. The best bridal shoes are the ones that make you feel beautiful and allow you to enjoy your day without a second thought!
