For engaged couples who love America, red, white, and blue and each other

As the owner of Montagu Meadows, a barn wedding venue in Westminster, Maryland, we love celebrating couples’ special day in style and of course looking at all the couples’ amazing engagement sessions at Montagu Meadows or the surrounding area. I love seeing the different personal touches to these photos such as their pets, firefighting helmets, American Flags and of course the fireworks. There’s something special about celebrating love with a little extra sparkle and a personal touch. And why not use the 4th of July for your engagement session. It is the perfect way to do just that. Whether you’re all about the stars and stripes or simply love the idea of a patriotic summer evening with your fiancé, a red, white, and blue-themed shoot can be both fun and meaningful. This blog post is to prepare you so you can capture those unforgettable moments with fireworks, flags, and everything in between.
1. Bring the American Flag (Use it Right!)
A Classic, Timeless, Beautiful Prop
If you love all things patriotic, don’t forget to incorporate an American flag into your shoot. Just make sure to use it respectfully during daylight hours, draped

over shoulders, used as a backdrop, or waving in the breeze. Please make sure the American Flag does not hit the ground. The flag instantly adds a fun, bold, and symbolic statement to your session. This is perfect for first responders and military personnel.
2. Dress the Part – and for the Weather
Think festive, flirty, and practical. Red, white, and blue never go out of style. Coordinate outfits that feel like you but still celebrate the holiday. Lightweight fabrics, breathable layers, and comfortable shoes are a must (it’s July, after all!). Sundresses, linen shirts, denim, and even subtle stars or stripes can be photographed beautifully without looking like a costume.
3. Treat It Like a Date Night

This is more than just a photo session. These are photographs that you will look at over the years. Laugh, flirt, sneak a kiss or two. The best engagement photos happen when you’re relaxed and genuinely enjoying each other. Bring snacks, drinks, maybe even a picnic blanket, and plan to hang out and enjoy the moment.
4. Consider Professional Hair and Makeup
July heat and humidity can wreak havoc on a look, and fireworks photos are often taken late into the evening. Hiring a pro can help you feel confident and ensure your makeup stays put especially if you’ll be sweating. Plus, it’s a great way to treat yourself and feel extra special for your session.
5. Plan Around the Sunset and Fireworks
Summer sunsets are late and so are the fireworks. Try to schedule your shoot so you can take golden hour photos first. That magical soft light is unbeatable, followed by the firework finale once it’s fully dark. Time is everything, and a good photographer will help you plan it out.
6. Scout the Firework Location in Advance
Know exactly where the fireworks will be set off and where you need to be to get the perfect view. In Westminster, MD the July 4th fireworks will be held at the Carroll County Farm Museum. The Gates will open at 4 pm and the fireworks will go off at sundown – approximately between 9:30 and 10 pm. You can even see the Farm Museum fireworks from the hill at Montagu Meadows, a barn wedding venue. Mount Airy will be celebrating on July 3 at the fire department grounds starting around 9:30 pm. In Taneytown, MD a grand fireworks display will occur on July 3 at 9:30 pm at Memorial Park. Whether it’s a field, rooftop, or park, planning your angle ahead of time means you’ll avoid scrambling during the show. You want to be ready for that first burst in the sky!
7. Capture the Firework Finale
Because the Best Comes Last
The grand finale is when the sky lights up with the most color, energy, and show. It’s the perfect time to capture those once-in-a-lifetime images. Holding hands, a sweet kiss, silhouettes against the sparkle. The look will truly be magical. And it happens fast, so make sure you’re in place and ready!
A July 4th engagement session is all about celebrating your love in the most

festive way possible. From patriotic details to fireworks in the sky, it’s a shoot that’s full of life, personality, and unforgettable energy. Embrace the moment, dress the part, and don’t forget to enjoy the show and being with your love one.
