When couples choose Montagu Meadows, a barn wedding venue located in Carroll County, MD for their wedding, they are stepping into a place filled with history, love, heart, and a deep sense of legacy. Owners Rob and Christina Krone didn’t just create a wedding venue—they preserved a story, one that began with a remarkable man named Montagu “Monty” Hankin.
Honoring Montagu Hankin
Montagu Meadows is named after Montagu Hankin, a World War II veteran, community leader, and passionate golfer. Monty and his wife, Marcia, purchased the property in 1983, making it their home in Westminster, Maryland. Monty was a father, grandfather and great grandfather before he passed in April 2020. He was an active member of the Carroll County community, lending his voice to the Carroll County Singers and finding joy on the golf courses at Wakefield Valley and Quayle Valley, often perfecting his swing at Island Green. He was also known to support several charitable organizations throughout the country.

Monty and Marcia purchased the property in 1983 from the Phillipes, The Phillipes loved to landscape and added Japanese gardens and red wood trees. They even renovated the old farmhouse. After Monty and Marcia purchased the property from the Phillipes, Monty worked hard clearing the meadows so horses could graze the fields. His daughter Alex and daughter in law, Meg kept their horses on the property along with a few friends like the Kirk family. A beautiful pond was later added by Alex Krone who designed it, and Monty added the inground pool for his wife and others to enjoy in the summer. This was paradise for Monty and his family.
But Monty’s story began long before his time in Westminster. He was a proud graduate of Amherst College, and during WWII, he served with courage and resilience. In December 1944, Monty was aboard the USS Reid during a resupply mission into Leyte Gulf when the ship was tragically attacked by Japanese kamikaze pilots. Against all odds, Monty survived the sinking, a moment that would shape the rest of his life.

A Wedding Venue Built on History
When Rob and Christina Krone took ownership of the property, they wanted to honor Monty’s incredible life and the love he and Marcia shared. They transformed the land into Montagu Meadows, a wedding venue where couples could begin their own journeys surrounded by the beauty and history of a place that meant so much to Monty.
Rob Krone structurally renovated the barn and Christina added her vision to the design of the barn and summer kitchen which became the bridal suite. Her love for antiques, shabby chic decor, and flower gardens are evident everywhere on the farm.
The barn, the suites, the meadows, and the serene landscape all hold echoes of the past while embracing the joy of new beginnings. Every wedding at Montagu Meadows is not just a celebration of love but a continuation of the legacy that Monty left behind—one of resilience, passion, and deep connection to community.
Together Rob and Christina have five children. Of the five, four have chosen to be married on the property with each child adding to the charm of the 1800’s barn. One of their son's and his wife help to maintain the property and help on wedding days. Their daughter in law has also started a wedding planning business called Best Day Events as the family tradition continues.
More Than a Venue—A Tribute

Montagu Meadows isn’t just a place to get married; it’s a venue that tells a story. Whether it’s through a quiet moment in the fields, a laugh shared under the barn’s wooden beams, or a dance beneath the stars, Monty’s spirit lives on in the celebrations held here.
Before Monty’s death, several brides were able to experience Monty’s charm. He enjoyed meeting all the couples and watching the couples fall in love with the property just as much as he had. Every couple brought a smile to his face. One couple even named their golden retriever Monty.
By choosing Montagu Meadows, couples become part of something greater—a story of love, history, and a man who made an impact on everyone who knew him. Montagu’s legacy lives on through every couple who gets married at Montagu Meadows Wedding Venue.
